Zebulon Weaver (1872-1948) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from western North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina Park Commission and was involved in the land acquisition process that went towards establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and development of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This set of two letters deals with the issue of compensation for the state of North Carolina from the Federal Government. Following are brief summaries of each of the letters: O.E. Starnes to Zebulon Weaver, April 17, 1933 In this letter Starnes thanks Weaver for any help he might offer to effect the bill passed by the North Carolina legislature asking Congress to reimburse Swain County for land taken over by the Government for inclusion in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Zebulon Weaver to O.E. Starnes, April 22, 1933 In this letter Weaver expresses his sympathy for Starnes’ views but also points out that Congress might not enact it considering Congress was also faced with requests for funds to complete the park.
