Description

Whittier is a small town located on the Tuckasegee River along the southern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. The town is actually situated in both Swain and Jackson counties of North Carolina. In the center of Whittier was its train depot which was served by Southern Railway Company. The Southern Railway completed its Murphy Branch in 1894, linking Asheville to Murphy.
