Description

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was established in 1933 as a public works program during the Great Depression. There were 22 camps located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Camp NP-17 was located near Waynesville, North Carolina. This photograph shows a camp in its early stages, when recruits were housed in temporary tents.
