On the reverse of this image is written, "M.V. Anthony - J.O. Andes H.R. Duncan - E.G. Frizzell and Prof. S.H. Essary between Thunderhead and Gregory July 5, 1930. CCC made picture." The photograph is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization that formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Dutch Roth in December 1924. The photograph was made in 1930 by Carlos C. Campbell (1892-1978), founding member of the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association. The back of the photograph is stamped “Jim Thompson Co. Knoxville Master Photo Finishers,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976).
