This 1930 photograph of a group of hikers, one holding a surveyor's measuring wheel, has written on the reverse, "Alum Cave - Mt Le Conte - Mt. Alexander [Jump-Off] party Labor Day (Aug. 30-31- Sept. 1, 1930) Back row: Bob McGinn, Carl Boger, Howard Hale. Middle row: Corrine McWhorte, Herbert Hunze, Carlos C. Campbell Front row: Norwall Taggart, Margaret Broome, W.E. Miller, Picture by Jim Thompson." The picture is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization that formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a noted photographer, hiker, and outdoor enthusiast was often referred to as the “Official Photographer of the Great Smokies National Park Movement.” The Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924.
