Description
On the reverse of this image is written, "Solitary Verio (?) Protesting against our proximity to her nest and babies, which we found swinging from end of oak limb only about 8 feet above the ground. Between Gregory and Parson's Bald- July 6, 1930. Photo by Guy Frizzell." Stamped on the reverse is, "McLean's Fadeless Prints Knoxville Tenn." The picture is included in the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club records, an organization formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Dutch Roth in December 1924.
