Description
The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains. The first official club hike was led by Dutch Roth in December 1924. This photograph, by hiker Mabel Abercrombie, is of Labor Day hikers at Enloe Creek along the trail to Three Forks. The back of the photograph is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976.) Little is known of Abercrombie, thought to be from Atlanta; she also appears in photographs with the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club. On back it has: "Left to right: Bob McGinn, Dent Frizzell, Carolyn Hogue (front), Elvie Manley, Mabel Abercrombie (front), Mrs. Carlos Campbell, Mrs. W. E. Trainer, Dr. S. Marcovitch, E.G. Frizzell".
