Description
On the reverse of this image is written, "Newton Bald - Thomas Ridge and Clingmans Dome as seen from the side of Hughes Rdige - along the Smokemont-to-Three Forks trail. #13 - Mabel Abercrombie Sept. 4, 1933." In 2024 Clingmans Dome was restored to its original name of Kuwohi. The photograph is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Little is known of the photographer Mabel Little is known of Abercrombie, thought to be from Atlanta; she also appears in photographs with the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club. The back of the photograph is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976).
