Description

Nomenclature is a system of agree-upon names, or naming conventions. This early 20th century nomenclature map attempts to list the names of places in and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as the park was being proposed. Today we know this area as the Great Smoky Mountains, but as this map indicates, the name can vary from “Smoky” to “Smokey” and, earlier to “Iron” Mountains. When first proposed, the park was to be named the Appalachian National Park. A note at the bottom of the map indicates that the names in yellow were taken from the U.S. Geological Survey.
