Description

This group represents a scouting party on Mount Chapman. Pictured are (L to R) back row - Argus Tresidder, Brockway Crouch, middle row - Carlos C. Campbell, W.W. Stanley, Harvey B. Broome, Walter Berry, Front row - Marshall Wilson, Dutch Roth. The 1931 picture is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization that formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the photograph is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
