On the reverse of this image is written, "Herders Cabin - south side of Sassafras Gap - between Cheoah Bald and Swim 'Bald' in Nantahala National Forest just north of, and parallel to, Nantahala Gorge Graham - Swain County (N.C.) line made by Walter M. Berry June 26, 1932 while scouting connecting link of Appalachian Trail from Great Smokies to Nantahala Gorge and Wesser Bald. - Walter Berry 6-26-32." The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The photographer is club member, Walter Berry. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
