Description
On the reverse of this image is written, "From the west end of the Sawtooth Range we see 'Charley's Bunion' (foreground, center) , Mt. Kephart (sharp peak in left background) and the Jump-Off (right of Mt. Kephart). Anakeesta Ridge and Boulevard junction peak is covered with clouds. Hard Storm (from Tenn. side) hit us while on Charley's Bunion. Driving rain- horizontal and even upward - pelted us as we crept thru jungle of fallen trees and briars. Too cold to stop. --- Walter Berry Aug. 12- '32." The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
