Description
On the reverse of this image is written, "Swim 'Bald' and Grassy Gap - route of the Appalachian Trail and on the Graham and Swain County, N.C. line - as seen from AT between Wesser, N.C. and Wesser "Bald." The finest obtainable view of Nantahala Gorge and marvelous views of The Great Smokies may be had from this ridge. CC Campbell - Guy Frizzell 6-26-32." The picture is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Eligible for entry in Master Snap photo contest. Ask Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
