Description
On the reverse of this image is written, "Looking eastward from the Jump Off (outlook point of Mt. Kephart) we see the Sawtooth Range - with the post-storm wind whipping the clouds back into N.C. --Laurel Top (at left of clouds) Pecks Corner and Hughes Ridge at right of clouds, Balsam Mountain (over Pecks Corner) Mt. Sequoyah and Mt. Chapman are bathed in the upper patch of clouds. Mt. Guyot and Old Black at left. - - Walter Berry 8-12-32." The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
