On the reverse of this image is written, "Looking across Nantahala Gorge from Grassy Gap. Wesser Sta. is at point of ridge just over heads of hikers. Grassy Gap is between Swim 'Bald' and Tyre Top - at head of Panther Creek. Appalachian Trail passes along the ridge in which this gap is located. This ridge forms Graham - Swain County line. - Walter Berry 6-26-32." The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The photographer is club member, Walter Berry. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
