Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "White Rock elev. 5025 feet easternmost high outlook point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park -- as seen from Tennessee Highway #75 south of Newport and Cosby Made at beginning of the 'vacation hike' - Aug. 7, 1932 - Dutch Roth." Today, White Rock is known as Mount Cammerer. The picture is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Eligible for entry in Master Snap photo contest. Ask Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
