Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "Call it White Rock (5025 ft) or Sharp Top - -- either name is quite appropriate, as you can see here. This is the last high peak (ft.) at the eastern end of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Left to right: Harvey Broome, Herrick Brown, Charles Gibson and Walter Berry. -- Walter Berry photo 8-7-32." Today, White Rock is known as Mount Cammerer. The photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
