Description

On the reverse of this image is written, "White Rock (Sharp Top), Low Gap, Cosby View and Ross View - along the state line at the eastern end of the Smokies - as seen from a 'knob' on Hell Ridge. - Walter Berry 8-9-32." Today, White Rock is known as Mount Cammerer. This photograph is included in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club which was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
