Description

This 1927 photograph shows the entrance to one of four tunnels between Santeetlah Dam and the power house at Rymer's Ferry. The picture is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Santeetlah Dam was built for hydroelectric generation on the Cheoah River in Graham County, North Carolina. The Santeetlah Project began in 1925 and was completed in 1928.
