This 1930 photograph of hikers on Round Top was taken by Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974), an avid photographer and one of the founders of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The hikers are identified on the reverse as, 1. Geo. Hackman, 2. Frank Oats, 3. Mayor Jas. A. Trent 4. W.E. Miller 5. Tom DeWine 6. W.E. Trainer 7. Robert L. Mason 8. Jno. K. Gillespie Jr. 9. Carlos C. Campbell 10. Tom Duncan 11. Clyde Mason 12. E.D. Ross 13. Marjorie Shipe 14. Hugh Web 15. Dawson King 16. Bob Maher 17. Rutland Cunningham 18. E.B. Kelley 19. Nell Rockafallar 20. Alma Shipe 21. Virginia Jones 22. Rhea Bryan 23. Carl Boger 24. Dorothy Trainer 25. Red Lautzenheiser 26. Ruth Aiken 27. Brooke Robinson 28. Dorothy Haasis 29. Pearl Munson 30. Mrs. L.E. Jean Taylor 41. Franklin Taylor 42. Frank Wm Taylor and 9 others left before picture was taken. The Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
