Description
On the reverse of this image is written, "Mt. LeConte, as seen from the ridge between Myrtle Point and the state line. Peaks, from left to right, are Main Top, East Peak or High Point, and Myrtle Point. Sept. 1, 1930." Mount LeConte is the 3rd highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, topping out at 6,593 ft. The picture is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization that formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. The back of the picture is stamped “Jim Thompson Co.,” indicating it was probably printed by hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976), a professional photographer who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians.
