Description
This short article announces that North Carolina and Tennessee have acquired over 100,000 acres of land that will become the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 1924, the North Carolina General Assembly established the North Carolina Park Commission to acquire land for a national park. Pledges from North Carolina citizens amounted to almost a half million dollars to be used to purchase land. By 1930, North Carolina had deeded more than 50,000 acres of land to the Department of the Interior, taking the first tangible steps toward creating a park. Tennessee soon followed suit. By 1934, almost all the land within the park boundaries was purchased and the deeds were turned over to the federal government.
