Description

This portrait photograph is of the George H. and Mag Caldwell family of Cataloochee. Except for the eldest daughter, all of the family members wear homespun clothing woven by their mother "from the sheep's back.” The photograph was made by Hiram Coleman Wilburn (1880-1967), an unofficial historian of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Wilburn was a proponent of a “living history” approach to preservation and proposed to include historic structures and cultural artifacts as part of the park.
