Description

This photograph is of Hiram Wilburn (left) and Mack Hannah who lived on Little Cataloochee Creek in Cataloochee, North Carolina. Hiram Coleman Wilburn (1880-1967) was an unofficial historian of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Wilburn spent time identifying historic structures, collecting artifacts, and researching local history. He is credited with curating the earliest collections that would form the nucleus of the park’s museum. The 1935 photograph was made by Edouard E. Exline (1905-1960), who signed his work “E.E.E.” Exline often accompanied Charles S. Grossman (1900-1972) and Hiram Coleman Wilburn (1880-1967) on historic preservation documentation for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
