This photograph is of (Uncle) Milas Messer of Cove Creek, North Carolina. Messer was a tanner and is shown here dressing leather. This 1937 photograph was made by Edouard E. Exline (1905-1960), who signed his work “E.E.E.” Exline often accompanied Charles S. Grossman (1900-1972) and Hiram Coleman Wilburn (1880-1967) on historic preservation documentation for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
