Description
This short note from Alabama congressman George W. Taylor (1849-1932) well illustrates the support received by the Appalachian National Park Association in its effort to establish a national park or forest reserve in the southern Appalachian mountains. In the 1899 letter, Taylor writes, “you are authorized to sign my name.” Although housed in Asheville, North Carolina, the organization was a multi-state effort, attracting representatives from six southern states. Founded in 1899, the association disbanded in 1905.
