Description

In this letter from March 19, 1862, George Washington Whitman, Walt Whitman’s brother, writes to Dear Sister in detail about what is later known as the Battle of New Bern. Beginning with his trip to New Bern from Roanoke and ending with his troops crossing the river and driving the rebels out, George gives us a behind-the-scenes account of the Civil War battle that took place March 14, 1862.
