Description

This copybook of 1761 and 1762 was created by William Twaddell when he was a student in Coleraine, Ulster, Northern Ireland under schoolmaster Mr. Connings. The copybook starts August 16, 1761 when Twaddell is fifteen years old and finishes March 26, 1762 when he is sixteen and leaves for America. Subjects included in the book are geometry, trigonometry, principles of navigation, a mariner’s compass, plain [sic] sailing problems, Mercator’s sailing problems, oblique sailing problems, how to read a traverse, how to keep a journal, astronomy, and land surveying.
