Tombstone of James M. Smith, first Anglo-Saxon child born west of the Alleghany (East of the Blue Ridge Mountains). Tombstone in Newton Cemetery on Biltmore Avenue. The Newton Cemetery is still in existence and was the resting place for many early Asheville citizens.
