Description

This 1914 postcard showing a portrait of the uncles and aunts of W. D. Wike (William Dallas Wike, 1867-1940) in East LaPorte, North Carolina is part of the Sara Madison Collection. The family members shown from left to right: (seated) Hix [M. Hicks] Wike (1850-1928), vacant chair for David Wike (1839-1910, father of W.D. Wike), John T. Wike (1846-1925), Sarah Wike Hooper (1844-1936), Margaret Wike Tritt (1841-1922), (standing) Ella Wike Coward (1864-1920), [Jacob] Witcher Wike (1858-1938), Rebecca Wike Rogers and James Wike. Dr. Sara Jean Sutton Montgomery Madison (1931-2017) had a lifelong association with Western Carolina University, and was married to James A. Madison (1928-2015), grandson of the university’s founder, Robert Lee Madison (1867-1954). As a child, Sara lived in Davies Hall on the campus of Western Carolina University, and later on Buzzard’s Roost overlooking campus with her parents, Eddie Marie Wike Sutton and Ralph Coleman Sutton.
