This photograph, dated February 9, 1909, of Balloon Route Excursion participants in front of Redondo Hotel in Redondo, California is part of the William E. Bird Collection. W. E. Bird’s brother, Terrell Bird (1885-1953) can be seen in the back center wearing a light-colored hat with his wife Alice McGuire Bird (1881-1974) to the right of him. Also on the back of the photograph is written Mr. S., Sen. S., Mrs. S., Theo Davis, and Our Guide. The Balloon Route Excursion was a 7-hour, 101 mile trolley trip for 1 dollar. William Ernest Bird (1890-1975) served Western Carolina University in various capacities during his long career. Bird’s roles at WCU included head of the English Department, Dean of Men, Acting President, and President. In 1963, he published The History of Western Carolina College: The Progress of an Idea. He was married to Myrtle Wells (1891-1983).
