Subject

Kephart, Horace, 1862-1931

Description

A photograph of "The Mail Rider," who probably served the Medlin community in Swain County, North Carolina. In "Our Southern Highlanders" (p. 30), Kephart notes that, "A mountain settlement consists or all who get their mail at the same place. Ours was made up of forty-two households (about two hundred souls) scattered over an area eight miles long by two wide." He also offers on p. 31 a description of the post office and "Star Route" mail service. Six previous captions with photograph numbers have been erased on this page and then fewer photographs in a different layout were arranged.
