In a letter to Louis Hampton, October 5, 1909, Horace Kephart details his travels over the past year, his current living arrangements with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barnett, future plans, and requests for news from Hampton about recent events in Swain County, North Carolina. At this time Kephart was beginning to establish himself as a writer and an authority on outdoor life and Southern Appalachia. He had lived in Swain County from 1904 – 1907, and would return in 1910.
