Description
Title devised by cataloger. "Photostatic copy by Dept. of Archives & History, Raleigh, North Carolina, from records in its archives, Jan. 18, 1984." Also noted are the locations of the residence of D.D. Davies in the Cullowhee Township, the Dills' Mills in the Webster Township, copper mines, mountains and mountain passes. The original 1868 map was prepared by J. Ramsey Dills, county surveyor for Jackson County, in compliance with an 1868 act of the General Assembly requiring all counties in North Carolina to be divided into townships. The map portrays Jackson County prior to the creation of Swain County in 1871 and delineates and identifies the eight townships into which the county was divided. A certification signed by Dills and the county commissioners accompanies the original 1868 map.
