Description

Western Carolina acquired university status in 1967. It was founded in 1889 as a semi-public secondary school and charterd as Cullowhee High School in 1891. It underwent several name changes in the early 1900s when its name was first changed to Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School in 1905, then to Cullowhee State Normal School in 1925, and to Western Carolina Teachers College in 1929.
