Western Carolina University

Cullowhee United Methodist Church located on the campus of Western Carolina Teachers College. The church was founded in 1894 as part of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South organization. In the years following, ministers from the Webster Circuit provided teaching and preaching to many Methodist congregations in the area. Cullowhee Valley Methodists met regularly in the Cullowhee Academy building prior to locating and securing a permanent building site. The current building was constructed in a record 90-day period from June 1 to September 1, 1936. Cullowhee United Methodist Church has served the Cullowhee community and the students of Western Carolina for over one hundred years, celebrating it's centennial in 1994.
