Description

The Golden Anniversary and Golden Jubilee on Saturday October 28, 1939, celebrated the 50th anniversary of Western Carolina Teachers College, homecoming, and the opening of six new buildings on campus. Officials and educators from across the state were present. This photograph taken by W. Newton Turner (1910-1995) shows crowds after the dedication ceremony of Hoey Auditorium, now University Auditorium. Governor Clyde R. Hoey can be seen holding a coat in foreground. Also visible are signs for the Public Works Administration (PWA) which provided partial funding for the new buildings. Turner began teaching as an assistant professor of geology and geography in 1937 and filled a variety of roles before retiring on December 29, 1971 as Vice President of Western Carolina University.
