Description

This 1939 photograph taken by W. Newton Turner (1910-1995) shows Western Carolina Teachers College Orchestra directed by Virginia Gustafson Fisher. According to the 1939 yearbook, back row (l to r) are Allman, Bird, Beck, Farley, Vincent Wright, and Joe Hedden. Front row (l to r) Bird, Pauline Farley, Jane Elliott, Virginia Gustafson Fisher. Turner began teaching as an assistant professor of geology and geography in 1937 and filled a variety of roles before retiring on December 29, 1971 as Vice President of Western Carolina University.
