Erik Watkins is interviewed by Laura Selby on June 2, 2016, as part of Mountain People, Mountain Lives: A Student Led Oral History Project. Watkins discusses his childhood growing up in Hendersonville, North Carolina and his decision to join the military. Boot Camp experiences in the Marine Corps, various aspects of military, and how the September 11 attacks on the United States contributed to his experiences with the Marine Corps are also examined. He talks about his experiences in Iraq and how it affected his views on life. The challenging transition to civilian life including, PTSD, faith in religion, and his decision to become a physical therapist are discussed.
