Description

Brenda Oliver Coates is interviewed by Holly Miller on June 1, 2016, as part of Mountain People, Mountain Lives: A Student Led Oral History Project. Oliver talks about her early childhood in East Tennessee and her career in nursing including working in the operating room at C. J. Harris hospital in Sylva, North Carolina. She reflects on her 17 years as mayor of Sylva, her time as a town board member, campaigning, and the many accomplishments that were made. Oliver recalls various organizations that she was involved with including the League of Women Voters, the North Carolina League of Municipalities and the Board of the National League of Cities.
