Elizabeth Mary Hyatt Gibson is interviewed by Lorraine Crittenden on April 29, 1986 as a part of the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project. Born in 1906, Gibson grew up in the Webster / Little Savannah area of Jackson County. She talks about being able to walk the seven miles to school only if she was caught up on her chores. She describes her mother’s in-home laundry business. Gibson married at the age of thirteen in order to get away from home. She also recalls two or three major floods, church, and interactions with her white neighbors and her life duing the time of desegregation.
