Harvey J. Kincaid is interviewed by Lorraine Crittenden on August 13, 1986 as part of the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project. His wife, Sadie (1923 or 1924-) is also present and comments throughout the interview. Born in 1917, Kincaid discusses extended family members and growing up on a farm in Murphy, North Carolina. He and his wife talk about community leaders, communion practiced in church services, and different celebrations such as Memorial Day and minstrel parties. Kincaid describes his experience serving in the Army in the Philippines during World War II. He recalls segregation of troops, bombings, and race relations when he returned to the United States. He mentions working for the hospital after the war for 28 years and becoming a minister. Kincaid and Sadie also discuss the integration of schools in Murphy during the period of desegregation.
