Description
Ressie Dehart is interviewed by Lorraine Crittenden on April 24, 1986 as a part of the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project. Born in 1914, Dehart remembers her grandparents and extended family members. She recalls living with her grandparents in Hendersonville, North Carolina after her father passed away. Her family moved to Bryson City and she worked as a nanny and hoed corn. Dehart discusses customs such as courting, parties, baseball games in Sylva on Fourth of July, and Christmas. She participated in a singing group that traveled to Canton to perform. Dehart worked for the Moody’s and Dr. Bacon. She also describes refusal of service at a restaurant in Bryson City during segregation.
