Description

Drag queen Scarlet Margo Rita (1996-) is interviewed by Sarah Steiner as a part of the Gender and Sexuality Oral History project. Rita is a cisgender, gay male who does comedic drag. Rita came out to some people during high school, but didn’t start to explore the world of drag until college. Rita details her first experience performing in drag on the campus of Western Carolina University. She talks about performing at The Paper Mill Lounge and Theatre in Sylva, the generosity of other drag performers in teaching her makeup and other skills, the process of getting ready for a show, the slow acceptance of her mother, and drag in rural communities. Includes an additional photograph of Margo Scarlet Rita in drag.
