Ode Bryson is interviewed by Lorraine Crittenden on May 15, 1986 as a part of the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project. Bryson grew up in Jackson County and discusses starting work at a young age after his grandparents died and his mother had many children to raise on her own. Gibbs went to work on a small farm, during the Great Depression he worked for the WPA building roads and walls, and later for the tannery in Sylva. He left for a time to work in Badin, and when he returned he was the only black man that laid block and rock in Jackson County. He talks about the changes he has seen in the community over the years.
