Description

Delsie Pettit Love is interviewed by Lorraine Crittenden on September 11, 1986 as a part of the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project. Love was born in 1893 in Andrews. She recalls her mother’s funeral when she was four years old, life on the farm, and travelling with her father who was a preacher. She talks about her father’s experience as an enslaved person in Tennessee. Love moved to Waynesville as a teenager and worked for prominent families such as the Woolsey family as nanny to James Reed, as a cook for Mrs. George D. Sherrill at her boarding house, and as a cook for Mrs. Smathers. She shares stories of going to New York City with the Woolseys in 1913.
