Abstract
This thesis is my memoir, a collection of creative nonfiction essays, depicting my childhood spent overseas and in the Southern U. S. as the youngest son in a robust and extroverted family atmosphere dominated by my Puerto Rican mother and our strict, military father, who hailed from Western North Carolina. Although the stories span my entire childhood up through when I entered the Army in 1976, their focus is primarily on my attempt to strike a balance with my dual ethnicity. Less is written about my father than my mother because this thesis is only a portion of what I anticipate will become a book. Throughout the text, I am the central character, but I have chosen to concentrate on telling my story by placing it in the context of what I remember about my mother and our moments together in our family. In so doing, true to the field of memoir, I have chosen to write about key people and selected events, and attempted to reconcile them with myself.
