Abstract

The paintings in my thesis titled, Hands and feet to Self: 180 Students 180 days: The Expressive Potential of Imagery in Painting, are a personal interpretation of my middle school students and their art classroom environment and how they cope with the No Child Left Behind Act. In my work, I hope to evoke a sense of anxiety, fear, disorder, freedom, confusion, claustrophobia and energy stemming from the students' antics and mishaps. My translation of this subject, as manifested in this series of paintings and sculpture, is one that creates a surreal world environment rather than a realistic depiction of the students, administrators, objects and events within my classroom.
