Abstract
Race as a social construct, discrimination in education, disproportionate representation of minorities in special education, teacher perceptions, and stereotypes both in terms of student expectations and names are reviewed. A sample of 130 preservice teachers read an identical description of student behavior with the student identified as either Jamal or Zachary. In addition to student ethnicity, participant ethnicity (African American and European American) was utilized as an independent variable. Measures of manageability, tolerability and severity of disruptive behavior as well as referral for evaluation and expectations of future success were analyzed. Results indicated both African American and European American preservice teachers rated Jamals behavior as more tolerable than Zachary's behavior. Results also showed preservice teachers predicted Zachary to be more successful.
