Abstract

Body image, drive for thinness, and perfectionism are important constructs since they have been linked to eating disorders in female college athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in body image, drive for thinness, and perfectionism among female intercollegiate athletes. More specifically, differences between female college athletes in ""lean/revealing"" sports such as track, cross country, and volleyball and ""non-lean/baggy"" sports such as soccer, basketball, ice hockey, field hockey, rowing, and golf. Participants included 81 female college athletes from a moderately competitive Division I school who were administered the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3; Gamer, 2004) as a measure of body image, drive for thinness, and perfectionism. The Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS: Frost, Martin, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990a) was also administered as a measure of perfectionism. A MANOVA was used to examine differences between Drive for Thinness, Body Dissatisfaction, and Perfectionism of female college athletes in ""lean/revealing"" versus ""non-lean/baggy"" sports. Results revealed marginally significant differences in perfectionism, with the ""lean/revealing"" group scoring higher on overall perfectionism and two measures of maladaptive/negative perfectionism. Additional findings and implications of the research will be discussed.
